The Area Day Event at Elvington Village Hall comprised of a talk on relationships in the morning, a bring and share lunch, a treasure trail and an antiques quiz in the afternoon.  As you can see from the photos the weather was not kind but, despite this, the delegates enjoyed the varied day.

AREA NEWS

There are 22 groups in the Yorkshire Area.   Although all of the groups are organised with the same basic aims of NWR there are slight differences.  All groups meet in a member's home for discussions, to hear speakers and to develop friendships but groups meet on different days and have extra activities such as book groups or theatre visits.

See below for a brief outline of each group as given by the Local Organiser.  Click on the group name for more details.

To get in touch with any of the groups please contact Lyn.

BEVERLEY NWR

The Beverley branch was set up in 1973.  We have around 27 members many of whom have been with the group for a number of years.  We have been lucky that, as members have left there have always been members joining. Thirteen members belong the Book Group.

We try to make our 6 monthly programme varied with one speaker each session, 2 or 3 subjects which need a bit of research, some straight forward discussions plus some light-hearted topics.  Quite a few include bring and share suppers.

There are a few social occasions each year when our partners can be involved if they want to eg a party in January and an open air concert visit in the summer. Partners are also involved in the Supper and Wine Tasting Clubs.

COTTINGHAM NWR

Book Group 6 members.  We each bring books we have read, chat and exchange.  Very casual.

Meetings – members do not like to prepare beforehand but we have lively discussions.  Usually 2 food evenings.  An outing in the Summer.  Sometimes theatre visits.

Age range 50-65.  One new member last year, a friend of a member and a possible new one this year.  Otherwise everyone has known each other a long time.

We do not all live in Cottingham.  This group was formed from Willerby Group which was so big in the 1970s it split into 2 groups.  We have a member from Swanland, Willerby, Kirk Ella, Newland Park , Cottingham Road and Cottingham.

DONCASTER SOUTH NWR

20 members aged 45-65.  Meet fortnightly on Thursdays in each other’s houses.

Very active social group- dinner parties, themed parties, social games evenings, barbecues. (Includes men- but not compulsory – some members don’t take part socially).

Daytime social group meets for lunch in local pubs.

DONCASTER TOWN NWR

The LO takes the chair and deals with administration.  We change LOs every 1-2 years.

We are a small but friendly group and would welcome new members.  Currently our members are 40-50 years.

We have varied programmes and some members attend conferences.  We have taken part in activity days organised by the Beverley Group.

DURHAM CITY NWR

We also have a Book Group which meets monthly, a theatre group, and ladies who lunch. We also enjoy days out having visited, The Houses of Parliament, Glasgow and Liverpool. Our next planned "away day" is to Edinburgh.

EPWORTH NWR

The Epworth Group is quite informal, being women of a like mind.  We have discussion evenings, fun evenings, theatre/cinema trips.  We always enjoy the Telephone Quiz evening.  We try to get a speaker every now and then.

HARTLEPOOL NWR

Age of members – 50 – 67.  We take part in NWR quizzes.  Programmes are decided twice a year at planning meetings.  Discussions are of lighter or more serious topics.  An outing each summer to a large house or garden in the area.  Christmas party with NWR quiz.  Christmas dinner at a restaurant.  Visit to a theatre or two each year.  Book Club twice a year, discussing a chosen book.

HARROGATE  NWR

All members are over 55.  Many are retired or working part-time.  The majority have professional qualifications having completed at least 3 years past 18 education.  Variety of other interests, often community based.  All of us have children though most have flown the nest.  We have a book group and a Thursday morning discussion group – the topic is decided by the hostess.  We go on walks in the Summer and have Summer and Christmas lunches.

HORBURY NWR

Meetings are evenings with occasional lunches. We cover a broad range of topics from serious research based to more lighthearted. Topics such as food & travel are always popular. We also enjoy day and evening social outings, such as cinema, theatre, meals, places of interest and gardens.

KNARESBOROUGH NWR

The few new members are followed by others leaving, moving to other parts of the country – we stay in touch with them.  We meet fortnightly at 8.00pm until anytime!  We have a book group which meets monthly, also monthly is a walking group and a lunch group.  Three times a year we have suppers with husbands/partners in groups of 3 couples at a time, a Summer barbeque and a Christmas party, also occasional theatre trips.

LEEDS NW NWR

Long standing members ranging between mid-forties and mid-sixties.  Core group of about 8 at meetings.  Try and have varied programmes with 1 or 2 speakers per year.  Most topics are “lightly” researched by each member.  No pressure to produce copious notes etc.  Theatre visits also popular twice a year.

NORTHALLERTON NWR

Our ages range form late 40s to late 60s.  We tend to do our own talks with lonely occasional outside speakers.  Often  the topics are shared between 2 or more members.  We try and cover a range of subjects each programme such as science, natural history, art, food, current affairs and literature with the odd quiz or light-hearted event thrown in.  We have regular coffee afternoons and lunch gatherings and sporadic walks.  We have supper club and usually 2 social events each year which include partners.  We often arrange day trips in the Summer months.

WILLERBY & KIRKELLA NWR

We plan the whole year’s programme in July for the following Sept to July; all suggest ideas and topics and then we vote.

Most members have been with us for very many years but 3 new ones have joined recently.  Average age now over 60 – so just a few in their fifties.

We like serious topics – nothing too trivial and we allocate each month’s meeting to a volunteer(?) who co-ordinates it and coerces!!? others to do the research.  Usually get 14 to a main meeting.

Book Group thrives with about 20 members – all very enthusiastic.  Always have a party in January and an outing in May/June – either a visit, a tour of somewhere or a treasure hunt.  Main meeting topics invariably require research – subjects often divided up so 4 or 5 people share the work for an evening (easier!)

YARM NWR

Most members are 60 plus.  All local.  Wide range of interests and past experiences.  Theatre attendances. Meals out. Normally 10-12 members at every meeting.

YORK NWR

Members mainly in 50s and 60s – in our middle years so we have wisdom!

Evening meetings, fortnightly.  Coffee mornings fortnightly on Thursday mornings between evening meetings.  Book Group approximately monthly.

Summer programme – walks, exhibitions, garden, house and museum visits.  Summer barbecue with husbands.  Christmas party.
